What some of our residents say

During a recent visit with their mother Mabel Grey, Arlene Moody and Thelma Dean expressed their enthusiasm for the Courtyard Program at Quarry Hill’s Anderson Inn.

"We’d been giving Mom 24-hour care at home for the last year. But she’d gotten so she didn’t want to get out of bed at all," says Thelma.

"She’d lost interest, and her arthritis was hurting so much," explains Arlene. "We knew we weren’t doing her any good anymore."

"Please come in," says Dorothy Hamalainen with a big smile as she offers a tour of the suite she shares with her husband David at the Anderson Inn. One of the Assisted Living Companion Suites designed for two roommates or a couple, their home includes two bedrooms, mini-kitchen/sitting area, private bath, and many thoughtful touches like full carpeting. "I really like that," says David. "Bare floors can be slippery." The Hamalainens have personalized their suite with family photos on the fridge, favorite pieces of furniture, and Dorothy’s latch-hook wall hangings.

Over a recent dinner highlighted by haddock in a tomato-dill broth with mussels, Betty Evans chatted about her decision to move to Quarry Hill.

A Bangor native, Betty had lived in another retirement community for twelve years. "There are many things I like better here, including my apartment. The layout is really good, and there’s more than adequate space. I especially love my sunporch.

"We have complete privacy. The walls are so well soundproofed you never hear anyone else’s radio or TV. When I’d like company, I just leave my door ajar, but people usually call before dropping in."

As Ann Montgomery and her aunt, Bea Stone, chat in Bea’s one-bedroom apartment at The Terraces at Anderson Inn, they touch on some of the reasons Quarry Hill’s Assisted Living program is so ideally suited to Bea’s needs.

For the past eight years, they explain, Bea was a resident of a senior apartment complex where there was no dining service or other assistance. "I made all my meals myself," Bea says. "But my eyesight had become so poor I couldn’t see the preparation directions. It was getting difficult to stand up that long, too."

At Quarry Hill, Bea is thoroughly enjoying being served three times a day in the dining room, and she has indisputable proof: "I gained six pounds in the first two months! Thank goodness I haven’t continued at that rate," she laughs. "But the food really is excellent here."

"I was just e-mailing a friend and going on and on about everything here. She probably thinks I’m exaggerating," laughs Stephanie Stewart, "but it’s all true."

What are some of Stephanie’s favorite features of Independent Living at the Anderson Inn? For starters, her apartment. "The kitchen is great. I can’t wait to bake a batch of bread. And I really like having my own washer/dryer. Some of the places I looked at provided one machine per hall, and you had to sign up to use it.

"The staff have become friends," she says. "Every week when my cleaning lady arrives, we have a visit. And the maintenance service is a luxury. When I had my own house, I’d call a repairman and wait, and wait. It’s also comforting to know there’s a nurse nearby, just in case something happens."
