During a recent visit with their mother Mabel Grey, Arlene Moody and Thelma Dean expressed their enthusiasm for the Courtyard Program at Quarry Hill’s Anderson Inn.
"We’d been giving Mom 24-hour care at home for the last year. But she’d gotten so she didn’t want to get out of bed at all," says Thelma.
"She’d lost interest, and her arthritis was hurting so much," explains Arlene. "We knew we weren’t doing her any good anymore."
They had looked into other places, but says Arlene, "Mom didn’t fit the requirements of any of them." Then she heard about the Courtyard, Quarry Hill’s state-of-the-art Assisted Living neighborhood specifically designed for individuals with memory loss. "I applied the next day."
Today Mabel enjoys participating in all sorts of activities. She’s not only taking exercise classes, she’s even dancing. With encouragement from the specially trained staff, she’s singing old songs with other residents, playing remembering games, and helping bake treats in the Courtyard’s country kitchen. When residents are taken on an outing, as they were the other day to get ice cream, Mabel delights in going along.
"I couldn’t be in a nicer place," says Mabel as she smiles and waves to one of her new friends, a gentleman who is also a resident.
After sitting a while with Arlene and Thelma in the enclosed garden, she leads the way to her private room, whose window overlooks the flowers. She picks up a favorite stuffed animal from the menagerie that fills an entire corner. Then she goes over to the bevy of photos atop her bureau, proudly pointing out her grandchildren.
Mabel appears completely content and is indeed flourishing in her new environment. "We’re very, very fortunate to have found Quarry Hill," Arlene concludes.
